Invitations are generally printed cards through which we invite our guests on some auspicious occasion like wedding, birthday, wedding anniversary, house warming, inauguration of a shop/factory etc.Invitations are of two types: (a) Formal (b) Informal.
They can be printed on cards (with center setting) or can be drafted in the form of letters. An invitation is complete information. It answers the questions: who, whom, when, where, what time and for what. The important components of an invitation therefore are:-
o The occasion o Name(s) of the invitee(s)
o Name(s) of the host(s)
o Date, time and venue
o Name(s) of the chief guest or special invitees , in case of an official invitation
A-CHARACTERISTICS OF FORMAL INVITATIONS
1- Meant for a lot of invitees (Card Form- Center Setting)
• These are written in the third person.• In case a VIP is invited as the chief guest the name of the VIP must appear prominently.
• Name of the invitee is not to be included. The addressee’s address is to be written only on the envelope.
• Simple Present Tense is to be used.
• The date of writing is not to be given.
• There is no signature of the host.
• The abbreviation RSVP (French : repondez s’il vous plait ) i.e. ‘please reply’ is written below on the left with name(s) , address and phone number of the host(s)
• Put the invitation into a box
• Do not exceed 50 words
2- Meant for an individual (a formal letter of invitation)
eg principal, people to be chief guest• Include the name of the person Features of a Formal Invitation
1. It is a single sentence presentation.
2. It is written in the Third person.
3. There is no signature.
4. The address is written at the bottom of the invitation.
5. The date of writing is not given.
6. The Simple Present Tense is used.
7. The lay out of the letter is such that each of the following is in a separate line:
(a) name of the host
(b) the Standard expression
(c) the reason of the invitation
(d) the time and date of the event
8. Inline commas are used.
9. Skip end of line punctuation.
Format of a Formal Invitation
1. Name(s) of the Host(s)2. Standard expression: (a) request the pleasure of your company (b) solicit your gracious presence (c) cordially invite you to (d) cordially request the honour of your presence (e) invite you to join (f) request your benign presence (g) seek the pleasure of your presence
3. Purpose of the invitation (birthday/marriage/inauguration/celebration of historic day etc.)
4. Name of the honoree (birthday person, bride, groom etc.)
5. Day, date and time of the party/function /programme.
6. Name of the place location with complete address.
7. Address of the host , Write the telephone/mobile No., Just below RSVP. RSVP (French expression : Respndez s’il vous plait means : Respond if it pleases you. (Pronunciation= re-spawn-day-sill-voo-play)

WRITING REPLIES (FORMAL AND INFORMAL) OR RESPONDING TO INVITATIONS
• A formal reply is usually very short. It is brief and to the point. The quality of a good reply is must always be pleasant. Even while declining the invitation or expressing inability to attend one must be polite and courteous. Formal replies demand a formal tone and treatment. There is no room for unnecessary details or superfluous matter in them.• An informal reply or private letter may, however, express personal feeling or desires in an intimate style and informal tone. Main characteristics:

• Express thanks in third person.
• Mention acceptance/regret.
• Specify the reason for refusal.
• Be brief and specific.
